Sendmail

Working with the Mail Transfer Agent

Sendmail is the Mail Transfer Agent and handles all mail processes for the system. Please see the sendmail Man page for a more detailed explanation. Also see the Sendmail Home page at http://www.sendmail.org/

Setting up the .forward file

As part of handling all mail processes there are often times when you would like to do other processes in the processing of your mail. Typical uses include forwarding mail to other addresses (see Man page) or forwarding mail to another mail handling program such as Procmail. For purposes of this discussion we will show you the most common use on our server, how to send your mail to Procmail.

Sendmail looks for this file in the user's home directory. If present it executes the commands contained in it. For our system the file looks like the following:

"|exec /usr/local/bin/procmail #user"

Note the the information after the # is your user name. Replace this with your user name. The quotes are necessary and must be included.

Where does my mail go?

All mail will go to your user inbox unless you specify otherwise in Procmail (i.e. send all my mail to my ISP's mail system). Your mailbox is accessible using a Pop mail program or by using Pine from a Telnet prompt.
